The Problem This Solution Solves
The Department of Defense (DoD) sought commercial data solutions for global weather sensing via ground, air, and space-based platforms to improve global environmental situational awareness and analysis, improve performance of global and regional weather physics-based models, and improve performance of global machine learning-based models. The commercial data was utilized in weather forecasting and impact applications, to include climate assessment. Priority was with commercial solutions that provide data from outside the Continental United States.
The Solution
Greensight, Inc. delivered a complete system for atmospheric measurements utilizing nanodrones, able to take off and land autonomously from a self constrained “hive” canister. This capability delivered a breakthrough global weather sensing capability that brings new capabilities to the USAF for tactical weather forecasting particularly in contested areas where little to no measurements are typically available. The project demonstrated the ability to build a canister containing up to 10 drones that can fly out 10 kilometers, fanning out over a 400 square kilometer area from their deployment location. The collected data then provides real-time data ingestion into a custom data platform that fully integrates with existing government weather data platforms used for weather forecasting. This included a custom graphical remote interface (GRI) for which to view and command the system.
