The Problem This Solution Solves
The Department of Defense requires data science and machine learning methodologies to improve its Planning, Programming, Budgeting, and Execution (PPBE) cycle and other operationally impactful decision processes. These processes are developed through manual analysis of large data sets which limits their full exploration and hinders the suite of decision options available to senior military leaders.
The Solution
In 2020, DIU transitioned a commercial data science and machine learning platform developed by Rhombus Power, Inc. and deployed to support enterprise decision-making processes at several Department of Defense agencies and service-level commands. This solution expanded the number of planning choices available to senior military leaders on a variety of key priority planning areas including force structure and design. The solution also generated and recommended three times the number of viable planning options and choices for senior military leaders while reducing the time required to develop these choices from three weeks to a single day.
